Coastal Collaborative Care provides IFS therapy in Virginia and other states throughout the country.
At Coastal Collaborative Care, we recognize that emotional healing involves understanding all parts of yourself. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy provides a gentle yet powerful way to explore your inner world, resolve emotional conflicts, and foster deep, lasting healing and self-compassion.
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
IFS is an evidence-based therapy that views the mind as a collection of distinct parts or subpersonalities, each with unique roles, feelings, and beliefs. Through compassionate exploration, IFS helps you understand and heal these parts, allowing you to access your inner strength, compassion, and harmony.
Some of our clients don’t like to use the word “parts.” That is totally okay. In those cases, we may refer to them as different aspects, versions, or elements of yourself or your experience. The language is flexible, and the focus is on understanding how these aspects of yourself interact, how they affect your behavior and emotions, and how you can find peace and balance among them.
How IFS Therapy Works
IFS encourages curiosity and non-judgment toward all these different aspects, helping you create a healthier relationship with yourself. By fostering understanding and compassion, the therapy allows you to heal old wounds and respond to life’s challenges with greater resilience and clarity.
Here are the basics of IFS:
IFS Parts
IFS views the mind as consisting of different “parts”—these are different aspects of your personality or emotional states. There are typically three main categories of parts:
- Exiles: These are parts that hold painful memories, trauma, or emotions that we tend to suppress or avoid. These parts often feel vulnerable or hurt. Sometimes we call these the wounded part.
- Managers: These parts try to control our day to day life and protect us from being hurt. They help us maintain functioning in everyday life and can often seem like they are controlling or perfectionistic.
- Firefighters: These parts emerge when something triggers the exiles’ painful emotions. Firefighters often react impulsively or destructively to distract us from the pain, like through substance abuse, eating disorder behaviors, or avoidance.
IFS Self
In IFS, there is also a concept of the “Self,” which represents the core, compassionate, and wise part of you. The Self is seen as the leader, capable of understanding, healing, and bringing balance to all parts. This is like your inner wisdom, the way you would speak to a pet, loved one, or child.
