WHY COASTAL COLLABORATIVE CARE

What Sets Our Virginia Practice Apart

Our care is grounded in a Health At Every Size® (HAES®) framework , meaning we reject diet culture and weight stigma in our practice. If you’ve felt dismissed, judged, or unseen by other providers, this office is designed for YOU.

We specialize, deeply

Every therapist on our Virginia team comes from a background in higher-level care settings, bringing a level of clinical experience that is genuinely uncommon in outpatient practice. That depth makes a real difference.

We collaborate.

Recovery and healing rarely happen in a vacuum. When appropriate and with your permission, we coordinate with dietitians, physicians, psychiatrists, and other members of your care team to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

We’re genuinely inclusive.

We serve clients of all body sizes, races, genders, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds, religious affiliations, and neurotypes. LGBTQ+-affirming care, neurodivergent-affirming therapy, and fat-positive care are core to how we practice, not an afterthought.

We’re rooted in the Virginia community

Founded in 2020 by Gabrielle Katz, LCSW, CEDS-C, Coastal Collaborative Care was built to fill a very real gap in the Virginia mental health landscape: specialized, affirming therapy that is accessible to the people who need it most.

INSURANCE & FEES

Out-of-Network Therapy in Virginia

Coastal Collaborative Care is an out-of-network provider.

We do not bill insurance directly, which allows us to give each client the individualized, unhurried care they deserve, without managed care restrictions limiting your treatment.

We provide a superbill after each session, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients are surprised to find their insurance covers a significant portion of out-of-network therapy costs.

We use a system called Mentaya to check your out-of-network mental health benefits for you right during your consultation call — so you know what to expect before your first appointment. We can also use this system to submit your superbills for you.

For clients who are active military or veterans:

Jennifer Forbes, LPC is a TRICARE-certified non-participating provider. This means she is approved by TRICARE but does not bill TRICARE directly — clients pay upfront and may submit claims to TRICARE for potential reimbursement.

Please contact us to discuss your specific coverage.

Frequently asked questions about our Virginia Therapy location

Do you offer therapy across all of Virginia, or only in one city?

Both. We have three in-person offices in Virginia (Alexandria, Norfolk, and Fredericksburg), and every therapist on our team is licensed to provide virtual therapy to clients anywhere in the state. So whether you’re in Richmond, Virginia Beach, Roanoke, Charlottesville, or a more rural part of the state, you can work with one of our specialized eating disorder therapists from home.

Where in Virginia are your in-person therapy offices located?

We have three Virginia locations:

Fredericksburg, VA: serving Stafford, Spotsylvania, and the I-95 corridor between Richmond and Northern Virginia.

Alexandria, VA (Old Town North): 901 N Washington St, serving the DMV, Northern Virginia, and the DC metro area, including Arlington, Fairfax, McLean, and Falls Church.

Norfolk, VA (Downtown): serving Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and the broader Tidewater region.

What conditions do your Virginia therapists treat?

Our specialty is eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID, OSFED, and disordered eating. Every clinician on our team worked in higher-level eating disorder treatment (residential, PHP, or IOP) before joining the practice. We also support clients with concerns that frequently co-occur with eating disorders, including trauma and PTSD, anxiety and OCD, depression, ADHD and neurodivergence, body image struggles, life transitions, and self-esteem.

Can I do virtual therapy if I live anywhere in Virginia?

Yes. Our team is licensed in Virginia, so we can see clients via telehealth statewide. Sessions take place on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. This is especially helpful for clients in parts of the state where specialized eating disorder care is hard to find locally, including Southwest Virginia, the Eastern Shore, and the Shenandoah Valley.

Do your Virginia therapists accept insurance?

We are out-of-network providers, which means we do not bill insurance directly. After each session, we provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients with PPO plans receive partial reimbursement for out-of-network mental health care. During your free consultation, we’ll use a tool called Mentaya to check your specific out-of-network benefits so you know what to expect before your first session. Jennifer Forbes, LPC, in our Alexandria office, is also a TRICARE-certified non-participating provider for active military and veteran clients.

Do you offer therapy for teens and adolescents in Virginia?

Yes. Several of our Virginia therapists work with adolescents, including Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for teen eating disorder recovery. FBT is considered the gold-standard treatment for adolescent eating disorders and empowers parents to play an active role in their child’s recovery. Let us know your teen’s age and what’s going on, and we’ll match you with a clinician who specializes in that stage.

What makes Coastal Collaborative Care different from other eating disorder therapists in Virginia?

Three things. First, depth of training: every therapist on our team came from a higher level of eating disorder treatment before moving into outpatient work, which is rare in Virginia and means you’re getting clinicians who genuinely understand the complexity of recovery. Second, true Health At Every Size® alignment: we will never recommend weight loss as a treatment goal or bring diet-culture messaging into your care. Third, collaboration: eating disorder recovery often involves a dietitian, physician, or psychiatrist, and we coordinate actively with your full care team (with your permission) so nothing falls through the cracks.

How do I know which Virginia office or therapist is the best fit?

Start with a free phone consultation. We’ll talk through what brings you in, your location and scheduling needs, and what you’re looking for in a therapist. From there, we’ll match you with the team member whose specialties and availability fit best. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll do our best to point you toward someone who is.

How do I get started with therapy in Virginia?

Call (571) 249-5332 or email admin@coastalcollaborativecare.com to request a free consultation. We’re currently taking new clients across all three Virginia offices and for statewide telehealth. After your consultation, we’ll schedule you with your therapist and walk you through everything you need before your first session.

If you’re looking for a ‘Therapist near me’ in Virginia, then let’s get started

You don’t have to keep searching for a therapist in Virginia who actually specializes in what you’re dealing with. Coastal Collaborative Care exists for people who deserve more than a generalist approach: clinicians with real depth of experience, a genuinely inclusive framework, and offices throughout the state.
