Therapy for Grief and Loss

Grief can come in many forms and can leave you unsure of how to cope with the pain. Grief therapy provides a supportive space to process emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, and find a path forward.

Coastal Collaborative Care provides grief therapy in Virginia and other states throughout the country.

Understanding Grief and Loss

Grief is a natural response to loss, affecting everyone differently. While there is no “right” way to grieve, therapy can help you navigate the emotional, psychological, and physical aspects of your loss.

Stages of Grief

The grieving process is often described in five stages:

  • Denial: Feeling numb or in shock as you process the reality of loss.
  • Anger: Experiencing frustration or resentment about the loss.
  • Bargaining: Dwelling on “what if” scenarios in an attempt to change the outcome.
  • Depression: Feeling deep sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
  • Acceptance: Learning to live with the loss while finding ways to move forward.

Grief is not a linear journey, and you may move between stages at different times. Some grief therapists believe we should not be using, or teaching, the stages of grief anymore. Some people take these as requirements when grieving, and they are not.

There is no predictable pattern, or expected progression when it comes to grief. Grief and loss can be such a painful and disorienting time. It can look however it shows up for each person.

Types of Grief

  • Complicated Grief: Prolonged, intense grief that interferes with daily life.
  • Traumatic Grief: Grief resulting from a sudden or unexpected loss.
  • Anticipatory Grief: Grieving a loss before it happens, such as with a terminal illness.
  • Disenfranchised Grief: When grief is not openly acknowledged or validated by society.

How Therapy for Grief Can Help

Grief therapy offers an individualized approach to healing, helping individuals work through their emotions, find meaning, and adjust to life after loss.

There are a variety of evidence-based approaches to therapy for grief, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps individuals recognize and challenge negative thought patterns related to loss. It can be beneficial in managing feelings of guilt, self-blame, or persistent sadness.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT helps provide emotional regulation skills to manage overwhelming feelings, distress tolerance techniques to cope with painful emotions, and mindfulness practices to stay present rather than getting stuck in rumination or avoidance.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS supports grief by helping individuals explore and heal the different “parts” of themselves affected by loss and fostering self-compassion while going through the grieving process.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps individuals accept the pain of grief rather than trying to avoid it, and encourages them to commit to living in line with their values despite the grief they are experiencing.
